DWI and Drug Possession Charges in Collin County and Denton County

In Texas, driving while intoxicated or with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% or more will result in a DWI charge. Texas also charges adults over 21 with DWIs, rather than DUIs, for driving under the influence of drugs. DUIs are reserved for anyone under 21 found driving with alcohol in their system.

Texas also has some of the harshest drug laws in the country. Charges can range from misdemeanors to first-degree felonies. Furthermore, although some states have made efforts to decriminalize marijuana, most Texas counties and cities continue to have little tolerance for it.

Being found guilty of drug possession or driving while intoxicated can feel like an uphill battle. A DWI can lead to having your license suspended anywhere from 90 days to two years. Both charges may carry hefty fines and/or result in jail time, with amounts and lengths depending on your situation. Convictions can also remain on your permanent criminal record, which may have other long-term consequences.

We encourage people facing these charges to call a lawyer immediately, especially one who is experienced with the laws of your area. Contacting a criminal defense attorney right after you’ve been arrested will give them the best opportunity to help you build a credible defense. DWIs and drug possession charges must be fought aggressively to mitigate any long-term consequences. In our experience, the sooner we get started on a client’s case, the more likely it is that we find a solution that is amenable to them and the prosecutor.
